This is the first of a series of articles from New York Comic Con 2011.
Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick brought plenty of laughs and stories about oil to Friday’s “Venture Brothers” panel at the New York Comic Con. The panel consisted of questions culled from emails that were only “slightly stupid.”
The true definition of a “rusty venture” came up with Doc saying Brock was closest to the truth. Jackson, on the other hand, believes it involves a barrel. It’s hard to believe it and Shallow Gravy (Hank’s band) weren’t in the first draft of the “Home School Prom” episode. When asked which character’s they’d like to get a “rusty venture” from Jackson answered Shore Leave and Doc chose Gary. However, the best was yet to come. (more…)
Holy Hilarity: Looking at Frank Miller’s “Holy Terror”

When discussing “Holy Terror,” Frank Miller has been very upfront that it’s a propaganda piece. Its goal is to paint the enemy in the most awful light possible to rally support. So when I read people like Wired.com’s Spencer Ackerman saying it is “completely uninterested in any nuance or empathy toward 1.2 billion people he conflates with a few murderous conspiracy theorists” I ask, “Why should it?” It’s propaganda. Propaganda is supposed to be one-dimensional. Did you expect it to be anything else? So onto the next question, is it any good? (more…)

Friday was my birthday and a tradition I have is seeing a movie with my Mom. This year my Dad had the day off so he came to. I decided the most appropriate movie for us to see was Transformers: Dark of the Moon. After all, the original, animated movie was always a favorite of family movie night. (At least for me) So was it the fun, family outing we used to enjoy during my youth? I thought so. (more…)

Ralph Macchio is not the “Karate Kid.” He is a Senior Editor at Marvel Comics who oversaw Frank Miller’s run on “Daredevil” and Walter Simonson’s run on “Thor.” In addition to these acclaimed runs, Ralph edited the wildly successful “Ultimate” line, which re-launched Marvel’s greatest heroes for modern times, and Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” comics. Today, Ralph has returned to an old friend, who happens to be Marvel’s next movie star, Thor. Ralph is editing the upcoming “Mighty Thor” book and “Journey into Mystery.” With the impending release of the movie, I talked with Ralph about Thor, why he’s important, why you should see the movie, why you should be reading Thor, and what it’s like to return to Thor after such a lengthy absence. Flint Dille was born to write. His father was the publisher of the original “Buck Rogers” comic strip and he’s followed in the his footsteps as an acclaimed writer of both animation and video games. During the eighties, Flint served as both a writer and Story Editor on a little known series called “Transformers”, including the mini-series, “Five Faces of Darkness” that revealed the origin of the Transformers. So what was it like working on one of the greatest cartoons of all time? What were the politics of writing such a show? Click to below to find out. (more…)
Six with Andy Schmidt of IDW Publishing

Cobra Commander is dead!!!!! Long live the Commander…or whom ever is under the helmet. (Killed in GI Joe: Cobra #12) IDW Publishing’s version of Cobra is far different then the Cobra I grew up with. And Cobra Commander, lets just say the one who’s six feet under is not the first to hold that title and at the end of IDW’s “Cobra Civil War” someone new will be stepping into that title. But who? IDW Senior Editor and Comics Experience founder Andy Schmidt knows, and I attempt to pry it (and information about the Transformers “Chaos” event out of him in six questions.

Tonight, I had the privilege of attending the premiere of the latest installment of Warner Brothers’ “DC Universe” animated movies, “All Star Superman” at the Paley Center. Based upon one of the greatest comics of all time I had high standards going into the screening. However, I also knew condensing a work as rich as “All Star Superman” into 75 minutes is a job for Superman. So how did the film hold up? Very well. (more…)
