What if Serpentor never happened?

In 1986 GI JOE fans got a surprise. Cobra got an emperor in Serpentor. (a clone of the ancient world’s greatest military minds.) Serpentor’s creation would lead to the revelation that Cobra was a front for an ancient society of snake people. But, what if things were different

Before the Serpentor mandate, GI JOE Story-Editor Buzz Dixon was working on a status quo shattering episode called “The Most Dangerous Man in the World.” The episode would reveal the origin of Cobra and the man whose philosophy drove them. For obvious reasons, Buzz’s episode was passed aside and vanished into the realm of “What-if.” Until now!

After 30 years of sitting on the shelf, Buzz Dixon has turned “The Most Dangerous Man in the World” into a novel to be released this Fall. I talked to Buzz about what we can expect to see in his novelization.

In the summer of 1986, children were traumatized when Optimus Prime sacrificed himself to stop his archrival, Megatron. But it wasn’t Megatron who pulled the trigger, it was a writer named Ron Friedman.

Ron Friedman wrote Transformers: The Movie. He wrote the five-part miniseries that launched GI Joe. He is close friends with Stan Lee and helped Stan develop The Marvel Action Hour, featuring Iron Man and Fantastic Four. He has written episodes of All in the Family, Happy Days, and Fantasy Island. In addition to his writing credentials, Ron is an architect and a teacher at Chapman University.

In 2014, Ron plans to chronicle his experiences as a writer in the memoir, I Killed Optimus Prime. The book promises a fascinating look behind the scenes of the shows that defined our childhood.

I had the privilege of speaking with Ron about his career, his friendship with Stan Lee, what he thought when he first saw the Transformers, how Orson Welles became Unicron, and why he didn’t want to kill Optimus Prime.

So, to kick off the 30th Anniversary of the Transformers, Ron Friedman, the man who killed Optimus Prime.

Cobra Commander is dead!!!!! Long live the Commander…or whom ever is under the helmet. (Killed in GI Joe: Cobra #12) IDW Publishing’s version of Cobra is far different then the Cobra I grew up with. And Cobra Commander, lets just say the one who’s six feet under is not the first to hold that title and at the end of IDW’s “Cobra Civil War” someone new will be stepping into that title. But who? IDW Senior Editor and Comics Experience founder Andy Schmidt knows, and I attempt to pry it (and information about the Transformers “Chaos” event out of him in six questions.
