One of the most hyped releases of 2015 is IDW’s revival of the popular 80’s animated series, Jem and the Holograms. Created by Writer Christy Marx, Hasbro, and Sunbow Productions, the producers of Transformers, GI Joe, and My Little Pony, Jem told the story of a young music executive named Jerrica who moonlighted as the pop star Jem and her struggle to keep control of Starlight Music out of the hands of her enemies. The show was a hit but went into dormancy for over twenty years.

But, nostalgia is powerful and you can’t keep a good series on the shelf. Jem is back, with a live action movie on the way and a brand new comic book. I talked to Jem comic book writer Kelly Thompson about Jem’s lasting appeal and why you should check out IDW’s new comic book.  (more…)

In the summer of 1986, children were traumatized when Optimus Prime sacrificed himself to stop his archrival, Megatron. But it wasn’t Megatron who pulled the trigger, it was a writer named Ron Friedman.

Ron Friedman wrote Transformers: The Movie. He wrote the five-part miniseries that launched GI Joe. He is close friends with Stan Lee and helped Stan develop The Marvel Action Hour, featuring Iron Man and Fantastic Four. He has written episodes of All in the Family, Happy Days, and Fantasy Island. In addition to his writing credentials, Ron is an architect and a teacher at Chapman University.

In 2014, Ron plans to chronicle his experiences as a writer in the memoir, I Killed Optimus Prime. The book promises a fascinating look behind the scenes of the shows that defined our childhood.

I had the privilege of speaking with Ron about his career, his friendship with Stan Lee, what he thought when he first saw the Transformers, how Orson Welles became Unicron, and why he didn’t want to kill Optimus Prime.

So, to kick off the 30th Anniversary of the Transformers, Ron Friedman, the man who killed Optimus Prime.

Chuck Dixon is one of the most distinguished creators in the comic book industry. During his tenure on Batman he not only created Bane but was an instrumental part in the creation of “Knightfall” and “No Man’s Land” both which served as inspirations for “The Dark Knight Rises.” But Chuck is more than just Batman. He wrote Punisher for Marvel, adapted J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” into a comic book, and is currently writing GI Joe for IDW. I recently had a chance to talk with Mr. Dixon about how he created Bane, the process of turning a novel into a comic book, why there won’t be any “Lord of the Rings” comics, what CrossGen was really like, and his thoughts on Bane/Bain Capital controversy.
